Joe Murdie - DP / Camera Operator / Shooter Producer
 

Joe Murdie is a seasoned DP and camera operator based in Wānaka, known for his captivating compositions, creative lighting, and deep connection to storytelling.

 

With over a decade of experience in the film and television industry, Joe's career spans multiple roles including Writer, Director, Producer, and Editor, though his primary focus remains as a DP and operator.

 

His extensive portfolio features collaborations with producers, agencies, and clients worldwide.

Joe's work has aired on major networks such as Al Jazeera, Bravo, TVNZ, and Māori Television, and has been showcased on streaming platforms including Amazon Prime, TVNZ+, GloboSat, and RNZ.

 

His accolades include; Best Film & Best Director for Planet 13 in 2024, Best Aotearoa Project for WALK in 2023, Best Documentary for ‘4130’, Honourable Mention for ‘ARE WE EVEN LISTENING?’, as well as numerous finalist and official selections across various categories including a finalist placement in the prestigious Flickers' Rhode Island International Film Festival in 2024, for PLANET 13.

Notably, his music video for Devilskin’s ‘NEVER SEE THE LIGHT’ has garnered over 4 million views on YouTube alone, with many others over 500k views. 

 

Joe is proficient with leading cinema cameras and equipment and owns an impressive array of in-house gear, including a RED DSMC2 and a basic lighting kit.

He is a hands-on, practical professional who often builds custom contraptions to capture unique shots, showcasing his dedication to innovation and creativity in every project.

 

Joe's also works regularly in OB / Live-to-air and is currently the Broadcast Technical Director for the Winter Games NZ, which has seen him oversee the technical aspects of broadcasting two Junior World Cups and two World Cups. His proficiency has ensured seamless, high-quality live coverage of these prestigious events globally.

 

Joe is an active member of The Screen Industry Guild of Aotearoa New Zealand, New Zealand Cinematographers Society, Directors & Editors Guild of Aotearoa, and Film Otago Southland.

 

His professional journey began in news and broadcast, music videos, and short-form documentaries, evolving to encompass TV series, commercials, short films, and documentaries across New Zealand, America, and South East Asia.

 

Outside of his work behind the camera, Joe is the host of the Film South Podcast, where he delves into the filmmaking industry in Otago and Southland, sharing insights and stories from the deep south of Aotearoa.

 

Joe’s commitment to his craft and his community is evident in his ongoing contributions to the local and international film scenes.
